Quick answer:

Dubai has 10 operational Salik gates in 2026. The variable toll is AED 6 at peak hours and AED 4 off-peak, and crossing between 1:00 AM and 6:00 AM is free. There are no booths — the gate reads your Salik tag or plate automatically. Rates and timings can change, so confirm them on the official Salik website before you travel.

Salik is Dubai's electronic road-toll network. Vehicles are charged automatically as they pass beneath a toll gate — there is nothing to stop for or pay at the roadside. The system identifies the vehicle through its Salik tag, account and registration plate. For tourists planning car rental in Dubai, the practical questions are always the same: where are the gates, what does each crossing cost, and who gets billed. This guide answers all three. For the full account and tag basics, see our Dubai Salik guide.

Salik Rates in Dubai for 2026

Salik peak and off-peak toll rates in Dubai for 2026

Peak, Monday–Saturday: 4:00 PM–8:00 PM AED 6

Salik may use different timings during Ramadan: AED 6 from 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, AED 4 from 7:00 AM–9:00 AM and 5:00 PM–2:00 AM, and free from 2:00 AM–7:00 AM. Ramadan timings are seasonal — check Salik directly for the relevant year.

Salik rates, free hours and holiday rules can change. Verify them on the official variable toll rates page before you rely on any figure here.

How Salik Charges Work

Salik is barrier-free. When your vehicle passes under a gate, the system identifies it, links the crossing to the vehicle's Salik account or rental-car record, records the applicable toll, and then deducts or later charges the amount according to the account or rental agreement. The amount depends on the time of crossing, whether you pass a paired gate, and the current Salik rules.

One-Hour Rule at Paired Gates

One-hour rule at the paired Al Safa and Al Mamzar Salik gates

Salik's paired-gate rule may prevent a second charge when a vehicle passes through both gates of a pair in the same direction within one hour. The commonly referenced pairs are Al Mamzar North / Al Mamzar South and Al Safa North / Al Safa South.

This is not a general exemption. It applies only to the specified gates, direction and time period defined by Salik.

The number of charges depends on the route you pick, the time you travel and the road you use. If you're collecting a car at arrivals, our Dubai airport car rental page explains pickup, and the route below shows what to expect on the way to the Marina.

Route using Sheikh Zayed Road

A common route joins Sheikh Zayed Road and continues south to Marina. Depending on your entry point, you may pass Al Safa North or Al Safa South, Al Barsha, and Jebel Ali if you keep going farther south. It is usually the most direct option but can create Salik charges. Check the toll count in a live navigation app before you leave, because traffic and closures can change the route.

Route using Al Khail Road

Al Khail Road suits trips between DXB and Business Bay, Business Bay and Dubai Marina, Downtown Dubai and Dubai Silicon Oasis, or Al Quoz and Dubai Marina. Business Bay Crossing sits on this road, so it may avoid some Sheikh Zayed Road gates but is not automatically toll-free.

Route comparison

Comparison of Salik routes from Dubai Airport to Dubai Marina

Route Possible benefit Salik consideration
Sheikh Zayed Road, E11 Direct access to Marina and Jebel Ali May pass Al Safa, Al Barsha or Jebel Ali
Al Khail Road Useful for Business Bay, Downtown and Al Quoz Business Bay Crossing may apply
E311 Can help avoid some central Dubai gates May add distance or travel time
Local roads May avoid a toll gate on selected trips Often slower and more affected by traffic

Legal Ways to Avoid Salik Charges

There's no need to stop, reverse or use restricted roads. The legal method is simply to choose a route that doesn't pass beneath an active Salik gate. Options include using E311 instead of Sheikh Zayed Road for selected Dubai–Abu Dhabi journeys, using the Floating Bridge instead of Al Maktoum Bridge when it is open and suitable, and using D83 or Rebat Street instead of the Airport Tunnel, depending on origin and destination.

These alternatives don't suit every trip. A toll-free route may be longer, slower or unavailable because of traffic, roadworks, bridge operating times or access limits.

Salik for Rental Cars in Dubai

Salik charges and penalties on rental cars in Dubai

On a rental car in Dubai, the Salik tag is linked to the vehicle, not to you personally. When the car crosses a gate, the toll is recorded against the car. The rental company may later charge you for the actual Salik toll, an administrative or processing fee, related penalties where applicable, and any amount stated in your rental agreement.

Fees and timing differ between companies, so review your DriveX quotation and contract before confirming. Salik's official toll and a rental company's admin charge are separate items. Our guides to Dubai car rental requirements, rental insurance and renting without a deposit cover the rest of the contract.

Rental Car vs Taxi vs Uber or Careem

Rental car versus taxi versus Uber or Careem for Salik costs

Option How Salik is usually handled Best suited for
Rental car Recorded against the vehicle; may be charged later under the rental agreement Several trips around Dubai
Dubai taxi A Salik charge may be added to the fare when the taxi crosses a gate Point-to-point travel without driving
Uber or Careem Tolls may be included according to the platform's current fare policy App-based transport

How Uber and Careem treat Salik depends on the platform, fare type and current policy, so check the booking details or ask the driver.

Which option is cheaper?

A taxi or ride-hailing trip is often more practical for a single airport transfer. A rental car gives better flexibility across several daily journeys — you can rent a cheap car in Dubai for city trips or an SUV for rent in Dubai for longer family drives — and lets you choose between a faster toll road and a slower alternative — though a later administrative charge may sit on top of the official Salik amount. The cheapest choice depends on journeys, parking, fuel, toll crossings and rental terms. For long stays, compare our monthly car rental Dubai rates, and see what parking adds in our Dubai parking fines and free parking guides.

Salik Penalties and Account Issues

Different account problems carry different rules. A vehicle without an activated tag may receive escalating penalties after the stated grace period, and an insufficient balance can lead to a penalty if the account isn't recharged within the applicable period. Amounts referenced include AED 100, AED 200 and AED 400 for successive tag-related violations, and AED 50 for certain insufficient-balance cases.

Penalties and grace periods are regulatory details. Confirm current amounts in the official Salik FAQ before relying on them. On a rental car, an official Salik penalty and a rental-company processing fee may appear as separate charges.
