Free Parking in Dubai: Where and When to Park for Free (2026).

Last reviewed: 2 November 2026By the DriveX Editorial Team · based on RTA and Parkin rules, mall operators’ published terms and 2026 reporting

SHORT ANSWER

Yes, but only in specific cases. Standard public parking in Dubai is free on Sundays, on announced public holidays and every night from 10 pm to 8 am; Friday is a normal paid day. Malls set their own rules (Dubai Mall gives 4 free hours on weekdays and 6 at weekends), and multi-storey and private car parks can charge on any day.

Many “free parking in Dubai” lists are out of date: they still call Friday free, ignore the 5% VAT added to Parkin fees on 1 June 2026, or call a mall free without mentioning the time limit. This guide sticks to the operators’ published terms and 2026 reporting, says clearly when something is reported rather than official, and shows what to do when you are driving a rental car.

Dubai street with RTA parking meters and parked cars
Dubai public parking uses paid zones, meters and apps, with free periods that depend on the day and the operator.

Is Parking Free in Dubai?

“Free” means four different things in Dubai, and each follows its own rules:

  • Schedule-based: standard public (Parkin) parking costs nothing on Sundays, public holidays and overnight.
  • Allowance-based: a mall gives a set number of free hours, then charges.
  • Validation-based: parking becomes free after a minimum spend, a cinema ticket or valet.
  • Venue-based: hotels, restaurants and residential buildings set their own terms.

An empty bay can still require payment. Before you leave the car, read the sign for the zone code, paid hours, maximum stay and who operates the space.

Is Public Parking Free on Sundays and Fridays?

Sunday free parking in Dubai: what changed in 2026
Sunday is the free day for standard public parking, while Friday is a normal paid day.

Sunday: yes, in standard public parking. Parkin zones are free all day on Sundays and public holidays, according to Gulf News’ 1 June 2026 parking guide. This replaced the old habit of treating Friday as the free day.

Friday: no. It is a normal paid day in standard public parking, so do not use Friday as a reason to skip payment, whatever an older article says.

A free Sunday has exceptions. Expect charges, or separate rules, at:

  • Multi-storey car parks and other special facilities;
  • 24-hour paid zones, such as the flat daily rate at Al Khail Gate, which is also enforced on Sundays (see the table below);
  • Parkonic-managed and other private operators;
  • Mall, hotel and event car parks, which apply their own commercial policy.

A free day never permits parking in a restricted space. No-parking areas, resident-only bays, loading zones and disabled bays are enforced every day of the week.

Is Parking Free on Public Holidays in Dubai?

Standard public parking is usually made free on official public holidays, but the RTA confirms the dates in a separate announcement each time. For Eid Al Adha 2026, public parking was free from Monday 25 to Friday 29 May and normal fees returned on Saturday 30 May. With the free Sunday before it (24 May), that was six free days in a row. Multi-storey car parks stayed chargeable throughout, and Parkonic-managed areas had no free-parking announcement, so drivers there had to follow the signs.

The next national holiday is Eid Al Etihad (UAE National Day), which Gulf News’ 2026 holiday calendar lists for Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 December 2026. Treat the date as expected until it is officially confirmed, and wait for the RTA’s parking announcement before you rely on it.

Before you leave a car on a public holiday:

  • check the latest RTA or Parkin announcement, not an old social media post;
  • confirm whether the bay is standard public parking or a multi-storey facility;
  • read the sign at the bay and note who operates it;
  • find out when paid parking resumes, so you are not caught by the first paid morning.

What Are Dubai’s Public Parking Hours?

In standard Parkin zones you pay from 8 am to 10 pm, and parking is free from 10 pm to 8 am. The Dubai Media Office’s variable-tariff announcement splits those chargeable hours into peak and off-peak:

“Peak pricing will apply for 6 out of the 14 chargeable hours per day”

Peak is 8–10 am and 4–8 pm, and Sundays and public holidays are excluded, as the Dubai Media Office states. Hours can differ in multi-storey car parks, premium zones, event areas, residential permit areas and private lots, so do not assume that parking is free after 10 pm without checking the sign. Maximum-stay limits also stay in force after the free hours begin.

Quiet Dubai street at night after 10 pm with parked cars
Standard public parking stops charging at 10 pm, but overnight rules still depend on the zone.
What changed in 2026: a 5% VAT now applies to Parkin services, including on-street and off-street parking, seasonal cards and permits, from 1 June 2026. Gulf News reported that base tariffs did not rise, so VAT is a 5% addition on top of them. Check whether the amount on the meter or in the app already includes it.

How Much Does Public Parking Cost in Dubai?

Dubai public parking rates for standard and premium zones
Peak and off-peak rates differ between standard and premium zones.

Public parking uses variable pricing, introduced on 4 April 2025: a standard zone costs less than a premium zone, and peak hours cost more than off-peak hours. Based on The National’s breakdown of the tariff and the 2026 VAT change, the hourly rates are:

Dubai public parking rates per hour (AED)

Parking typeBefore VATWith 5% VAT (from 1 June 2026)
Standard zone, peak (8–10 am, 4–8 pm)AED 4AED 4.20
Standard zone, off-peak (10 am–4 pm, 8–10 pm)AED 2–4, depending on the zoneAED 2.10–4.20
Premium zone, peakAED 6AED 6.30
Premium zone, off-peakSame as the standard off-peak rate of that zoneAED 2.10–4.20
Event or special facilitySet by the operator and can be higherCheck the sign

Worked example: two hours in a premium zone from 5 pm fall entirely in peak time, so they cost 2 × AED 6.30 = AED 12.60 with VAT. The same two hours between 10 am and 4 pm would cost less, at the off-peak rate of that zone. Treat these figures as a planning guide: the parking meter, the Parkin app and the sign beside the bay show the exact rate for your zone.

What Are Premium Parking Zones?

Premium parking covers high-demand, densely populated areas, including spaces near public transport hubs. The National named Deira, Bur Dubai, Downtown Dubai, Business Bay, Jumeirah and Al Wasl Road among the premium areas, with premium parts of each zone marked AP, BP, CP and DP. Classification can change from street to street, so read the code on the sign rather than guessing from the neighbourhood.

Is Dubai Mall Parking Free?

Free parking at Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates
Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates both offer a free period, then charge by the hour band.

Partly. Dubai Mall’s official paid-parking page gives the first 4 hours free on weekdays and the first 6 hours free at weekends. Fees are deducted automatically from your Salik account after your plate is scanned.

Dubai Mall parking rates (official tariff)

DurationWeekdayWeekend
0–4 hoursFreeFree
4–5 hoursAED 20Free
5–6 hoursAED 60Free
6–7 hoursAED 80AED 80
7–8 hoursAED 100AED 100
More than 8 hoursAED 200AED 200
More than 12 hoursAED 500AED 500
24 hoursAED 1,000AED 1,000

The difference matters: a 5.5-hour visit falls in the 5–6 hour band, which costs AED 60 on a weekday and nothing at the weekend. The page publishes no separate row for 8–12 hours, so the “more than 8 hours” rate is the one that applies there.

With a rental car: the charge follows the number plate, not a ticket in your hand. Set a reminder before the free period ends, and ask your rental company how Salik and parking charges are passed on.

Is Mall of the Emirates Parking Free?

Yes for a limited time. Mall of the Emirates runs a ticketless, barrierless car park: cameras read your number plate on entry and track how long you stay. The published rules and the launch reporting add up to this:

Mall of the Emirates parking: what is published

RuleDetail
WeekdaysFirst 4 hours free
WeekendsReported as free on Saturday and Sunday (Khaleej Times); confirm on arrival
After the free timeAn SMS with the fee and a payment link goes to the number linked to your vehicle; the first paid band (4–5 hours) was reported at AED 20
Spend AED 150 or moreValidate your receipt at the Customer Service Desk for free parking for the whole day
Unpaid chargeA AED 150 fine was reported if the fee is not paid within 3 days
OvernightReported as not permitted

Hourly steps beyond the first paid band have been reported differently across sources and the official page does not publish a tariff, so rely on the amount in your SMS rather than a table. Cinema and Ski Dubai visitors may get extra free time through validation: ask at the desk before you pay.

Which Other Places Offer Free Parking?

Places where parking can be free in Dubai
Free parking depends on the operator: public zone, mall, hotel, restaurant or residential building.

Many malls offer some form of free parking, but the arrangement differs: free for the whole visit, for a fixed number of hours, only on certain days, with a minimum spend, or with validation. A mall’s policy is a commercial rule, not an RTA rule, and it can change without much notice. For that reason we only list Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates above, where the operators publish their terms, and we do not call any mall “permanently free”. Before you park at any other mall, check:

  • the entrance board and the mall’s official parking page;
  • how long the free period lasts and whether it differs on weekends;
  • whether plate recognition or a ticket is used;
  • whether you must validate after shopping, dining or watching a film.

Hotels and restaurants may offer free parking only to guests or customers, with a minimum spend, valet-only, or for a limited number of hours. Ask before you leave the car and keep the receipt or validation message until you exit. Residential streets are not automatically free: some bays are paid public parking and others are reserved for residents or permit holders, so never use a space just because it is empty. Beaches vary by location; a road beside the sea is not automatically a legal bay, and parking on a pavement or an access route is an AED 200 violation.

Where Is Parking Paid Every Day, Including Sundays?

Some facilities charge seven days a week and around the clock. These examples come from a Gulf News report updated in August 2025, so confirm the current rate on the sign:

Paid parking that does not follow the Sunday and night rules (as reported in August 2025)

LocationHow it works
Parkin multi-storey car parksEight buildings (Al Ghubaiba, Al Sabkha, Naif, Oud Metha, Al Satwa, Al Rigga, Bani Yas, Al Jaffiliya) charge seven days a week, from AED 5 an hour or AED 40 for 24 hours
Mosque car parksReported as one free hour during prayer times at 59 mosques, with 24-hour paid parking outside those hours
Al Khail Gate (zone 365N)A flat AED 30 per day, enforced every day including Sundays
Some Parkonic-managed sitesCan charge 24/7 with a free period that varies, for example 30 minutes at Palm West Beach

How Do I Check and Pay for Parking in Dubai?

Driver paying for parking in an app next to the car
Pay in the Parkin app, by SMS or at the meter, and always check the plate and zone code.
  1. Identify the operator. Public street parking, a Parkin facility, a mall, a hotel or a private lot each has its own rules and payment method.
  2. Read the sign before you walk away. Note the zone code, paid hours, maximum stay, rate and any permit restriction.
  3. Check the current information in the Parkin app, the RTA Dubai app or the mall’s official page.
  4. Note the exact moment charges begin if the first hours are free, and set a phone reminder.
  5. Keep proof of payment or validation until you have left the car park.

Public parking can be paid in the Parkin app or on its website, by SMS, or at a meter. Malls use their own systems: Dubai Mall deducts through Salik, while Mall of the Emirates sends a payment link by SMS. When you pay by SMS, enter the plate and zone code exactly; a small error can make the payment invalid.

Can I Park Overnight for Free in Dubai?

In standard Parkin zones, charges stop at 10 pm and start again at 8 am, but that does not make every bay an overnight bay. Before you leave a car overnight, check the maximum stay, whether the area is a loading or restricted zone, and whether the car park is private or closes at night. Do not leave a car overnight in a mall or hotel car park without checking: Mall of the Emirates reportedly does not allow overnight parking, and Dubai Mall’s 24-hour rate is AED 1,000.

What Happens If I Do Not Pay for Parking?

Not paying, or breaking the parking conditions, leads to a fine. Gulf News’ list of Dubai parking fines, last updated on 15 October 2026, gives these amounts:

Dubai parking fines by type of violation (AED)

ViolationRoadside and plot parkingMulti-storey car parks
Parking without paying or evading the fee1501,000
Overstaying the permitted time100500
Pavement, no-parking area or wrong zone200200
Blocking a space, entrance or exit200200
Disabled (People of Determination) space without a valid permit1,0001,000
Losing your parking ticket or card—150

You can pay on the Parkin website or in its app by searching your plate or fine number. Mall systems have their own penalties, such as the AED 150 reported at Mall of the Emirates after three unpaid days. If a fine arrives on a rental car, read our guide to Dubai parking fines and the hidden costs of car rental in Dubai. A free day does not protect a car parked illegally.

Common Mistakes When Looking for Free Parking

  • Assuming Friday is free. Sunday is the free day; Friday is a normal paid day.
  • Treating a mall policy as an RTA policy. A mall can charge while nearby public parking is free, and the reverse.
  • Forgetting the free period ends. Plate-recognition systems charge automatically, so leaving late costs money.
  • Parking in a restricted bay. A free bay can still be reserved for residents, loading or people of determination.
  • Using an old article. Tariffs, VAT, mall terms and holiday arrangements change; check the current source.
  • Ignoring who pays on a rental car. Parking, Salik and fines usually follow the driver, so confirm the terms before you book.

Free Parking Tips for Rental Cars in Dubai

If you are renting a car in Dubai, ask the rental company these questions before you book:

  • How are mall parking charges processed, and is the car linked to Salik?
  • Who pays parking fees after a free period, and how are fines passed on?
  • Are Salik, fuel and parking included in the rental price?
  • Can the car be delivered to your hotel, home or the airport?

A rental car makes it easy to reach different parts of Dubai, but the driver stays responsible for the parking rules. DriveX delivers and collects cars across Dubai, including at Dubai International Airport, and offers rentals with no deposit. Delivery is free, but it does not make parking at a mall, hotel, airport or public car park free. Parking, Salik, fuel and fines are charged separately; our Salik guide for rental cars explains how tolls are billed, and DriveX adds an AED 50 admin fee per fine under its rental terms.

If you would rather not hunt for bays and queue at valets, a car rental with a driver in Dubai takes the parking question off your day entirely.

Final Advice

Quick summary of free parking rules in Dubai
A quick reminder before you leave the car: day, zone, operator and payment.
Bottom line: free parking in Dubai exists, but it depends on the operator, the day and the time. Standard public bays are free on Sundays, public holidays and overnight, Friday is paid, and malls give a limited free period. Read the sign, check the app and keep proof of payment.
  • Check whether the car park is public or private.
  • Read the sign and the zone code before you leave the vehicle.
  • Verify the current rate, including 5% VAT, in the Parkin or RTA Dubai app or on the mall’s official page.
  • Set a reminder before any free period ends.
  • Keep your receipt, screenshot or validation message.
  • Never use a restricted space just because it is empty.

Parking rules change around public holidays, major events, Ramadan and peak tourist seasons, so confirm the latest information before you rely on any list of free locations, including this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What day is free parking in Dubai?

Sunday. Standard public (Parkin) parking is free all day on Sundays and on announced public holidays. Multi-storey car parks, 24-hour paid zones and private or mall car parks can still charge, so read the sign at the bay.

Is Dubai parking free on Friday?

No. Friday is a normal paid day in standard public parking, and many older guides that call it free are out of date. Pay as you would on any weekday.

Is Dubai parking free on public holidays?

Usually, in standard public parking, but the RTA confirms each holiday separately. For Eid Al Adha 2026, public parking was free from Monday 25 to Friday 29 May while multi-storey car parks stayed chargeable.

Is parking free at night in Dubai?

In standard Parkin zones, yes: paid parking runs from 8 am to 10 pm, so it is free from 10 pm to 8 am. Some zones, multi-storey car parks, mosque car parks and private lots charge at night, and overnight parking is not allowed everywhere.

Is Dubai Mall parking free?

For a limited time. Dubai Mall gives the first 4 hours free on weekdays and the first 6 hours free on weekends. After that, tiered charges apply and are deducted automatically through Salik.

Is Mall of the Emirates parking free?

For the first 4 hours on weekdays, and weekend parking has been reported as free. The car park is ticketless: if you stay past the free time you receive an SMS payment link, and spending AED 150 or more with a validated receipt makes the day free.

Are all shopping malls in Dubai free to park at?

No. Each mall sets its own policy: free for a few hours, free with a minimum spend, free with validation, or paid from the first hour. Check the entrance sign and the mall’s official parking page on the day.

Does VAT apply to Dubai parking fees?

Yes. From 1 June 2026 a 5% VAT applies to Parkin services, including on-street and off-street parking, seasonal cards and permits, so an AED 4 hour costs AED 4.20 and an AED 6 premium peak hour costs AED 6.30.

How much is the fine if I do not pay for parking?

On roadside bays, parking without paying is an AED 150 fine and overstaying the paid time is AED 100. In multi-storey car parks, evading payment is AED 1,000. Mall systems can add their own penalty; Mall of the Emirates reports AED 150 if a charge is unpaid after three days.

Who pays parking charges and fines on a rental car?

The driver. Parking, Salik, fuel and traffic fines are charged separately from the daily rental price, and DriveX adds an AED 50 admin fee per fine under its rental terms. Check these points in your quotation before you book.

Can I leave my rental car in free parking overnight?

Only where overnight parking is allowed. Check the maximum stay, the zone hours and the rules of the operator; Mall of the Emirates, for example, does not permit overnight parking.

Is parking free at Dubai beaches?

It depends on the beach. Some public bays are free, others are paid public zones or belong to a hotel or beach club. Read the zone sign, and never park on pavements or access routes: a pavement or no-parking violation is an AED 200 fine.

Questions Visitors Ask Us

Two questions we hear often about parking in Dubai, answered by the DriveX team. Have your own? Ask it in the comments below.

VISITOR QUESTION

“We have a rental car for five days and want a full Saturday at Dubai Mall. Will we pay for parking?”

DriveX Team

Saturday is a weekend day, so the first 6 hours are free. A stay of 6–7 hours costs AED 80 and a stay of 7–8 hours AED 100, deducted through Salik by plate. Set a reminder at the 5-hour mark, and ask how Salik and parking charges are passed on for your rental. With DriveX, parking is charged separately from the daily rental price.

VISITOR QUESTION

“Is Sunday parking free everywhere? We left the car at a hotel car park and a mall car park on a Sunday.”

DriveX Team

No. Sunday is free in standard public (Parkin) bays, not in hotel, mall or other private car parks, nor in multi-storey and 24-hour paid zones. Those operators set their own rules and may charge on Sundays. Check the entrance sign, and ask the hotel about guest validation before you leave the car.

Official rules and live tariffs are published by Parkin and the RTA; always confirm the current amount on the sign or in the app. Mall lists and comparable claims found elsewhere online were not used here unless an operator’s own page supports them.
