Are taxis expensive in Dubai? This is probably one of the first questions every traveler asks right after landing at DXB (Dubai International Airport). Dubai is a city known for luxury everything, but when it comes to getting around, the options range from affordable to VIP level.

While Dubai does offer a solid public transport system, many prefer hopping into a taxi for comfort, speed, and air conditioning, which is way more preferred. In this guide, brought to you by DriveX, we answer the question “How much does a taxi cost in Dubai?” and then take a look at alternative options such as Uber or rental cars.

Outdated

Updated · October 2026

  1. Airport Taxi: available at DXB Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and at DWC. It is metered, not fixed-price: AED 20 starting fare (AED 25 for a van) plus AED 2.62 per km.

  1. Standard Taxi: The most common type of taxi that is available 24/7.
  2. Ladies and Family Taxi: This type has a female driver.
  3. People of Determination Taxi: It has wider doors and is well-equipped to serve POD (People of Determination Taxi) better.

New in 2026 update

In short: the AED 12 in the old version is the minimum fare, not the starting fare, and the per-km rate is now AED 2.45, not AED 1.80–2.00. The night rate is AED 5.50 instead of AED 5 for a street-hail taxi.

Starting fare vs minimum fare: what is the difference?

New

The starting fare (flag-down) is what the meter shows when the trip begins. Distance and waiting time are then added. The minimum fare is the lowest total you can be charged — it is never added on top of the starting fare.

Example: a 1 km daytime street-hail trip calculates as AED 5 + AED 2.45 = AED 7.45. That is below the AED 12 minimum, so you pay AED 12. This is also the answer to “Dubai taxi 1 km price”: a single kilometre always costs the minimum fare.

10 am–4 pm is the cheapest app-booking window every day of the week. On weekdays, booking at 7:55 am instead of 8:05 am saves AED 4 on the starting fare.

Is there a separate booking fee?

Updated · October 2026

Apps show a booking component of about AED 4 off-peak, AED 4.50 at night and AED 7.50 at peak times (Gulf News, October 2026). It is already part of the app starting fare: AED 5 + AED 4 ≈ AED 9, AED 5.50 + AED 4.50 = AED 10, and AED 5 + AED 7.50 ≈ AED 13. Do not add it a second time when you estimate a trip.

How the Dubai Taxi Fare Is Calculated

Dubai taxi fare formula
Dubai taxi fare formula: starting fare + km × AED 2.45 + waiting × AED 0.50 + Salik + Sharjah fee, then apply the minimum fare.

New

The calculator at the top of this page uses the official 2026 tariff. The formula is the same one the RTA publishes:

Taxi fare = starting fare + (km × AED 2.45) + (waiting minutes × AED 0.50) + Salik + Sharjah fee (if any) — then apply the minimum fare

Worked example: a 10 km daytime street-hail trip with 5 minutes stuck in traffic = AED 5 + AED 24.50 + AED 2.50 = AED 32.00, plus Salik if you pass a toll gate. Try it on your own distance in the fare calculator.

Three fares worked out by hand

Fare = starting fare + (km × AED 2.45) + (waiting minutes × AED 0.50) + Salik + Sharjah fee
If the result is under the minimum fare, you pay the minimum instead. Airport pickups use AED 2.62 per km.

22 km street hail, daytime, 1 peak Salik gate5.00 + (22 × 2.45) + 6.30AED 65.20
9 km app booking at peak, 10 minutes of traffic13.00 + (9 × 2.45) + (10 × 0.50)AED 40.05
2 km street hail, under the minimum fareMeter reads AED 9.90, so the minimum appliesAED 12.00

Is Taking a Taxi in Dubai Expensive?

So, are taxis expensive in Dubai? It depends on where you are coming from. Compared to cities like London, New York, or Tokyo, Dubai taxi rates in 2025 2026 are pretty reasonable. But compared to public transport or walking (if you can handle the desert heat), taxis are definitely on the pricier side.

Having updated information is so crucial that you might find yourself Googling “Dubai taxi rates 2025 2026”. So let’s look at some real-world examples:

Getting a taxi instead of walking or using Dubai public transportation has some advantages:

  • They are clean.

Outdated

  • They are always available 24/7, even in the middle of nowhere.

Updated · October 2026

  • They run 24/7, but availability is not guaranteed everywhere. In quieter areas or at busy times, book through an app; only hail a taxi where it is safe to stop.

  • Drivers are government-licensed, friendly, and professional.

So even if the cost of transportation in Dubai feels slightly higher, the convenience factor is 10/10.

Extra Charges That Increase Your Dubai Taxi Fare

New

Salik toll gates

Each Salik gate adds AED 4.20 off-peak or AED 6.30 at peak times to a taxi fare. You can ask the driver to avoid toll roads, but a longer route can cost more in distance. See the Salik gates map to plan your route.

Waiting and slow traffic

Waiting costs AED 0.50 per minute: 10 minutes in a jam adds AED 5, and 20 minutes adds AED 10.

Trips through Sharjah

An extra AED 20 is added when the trip passes through Sharjah.

Events and New Year’s Eve

At major event locations such as Global Village, Expo City Dubai and Dubai World Trade Centre, the starting fare can be up to AED 20. Fares can also change on New Year’s Eve. Check the meter when you get in.

When the ride is free

Under RTA rules, the journey is free if the meter is not working or the taxi breaks down during the trip.

Dubai Airport Taxi Fare (DXB and DWC)

New

Taxis from Dubai International (DXB) and Al Maktoum (DWC) start at AED 20, or AED 25 for a van, and charge AED 2.62 per km. They are metered, so the price depends on the distance. A trip to Downtown or Dubai Mall is roughly 15–25 km, and Dubai Marina, JBR or Palm Jumeirah is 35–55 km. For every route, see our Dubai airport taxi fare guide.

Going back to the airport? A taxi you hail or book from your hotel uses the normal city tariff (AED 5 or AED 9–13 start), not the airport starting fare. If you would rather drive yourself, DriveX offers car rental at Dubai Airport with free delivery.

“Is Uber cheaper than taxi in Dubai?” Now that is a common question. In many normal situations, RTA taxis are cheaper than Uber. Uber can be more comfortable (nicer cars, some with WiFi), but during busy hours like 6–9 PM or Friday evenings, Uber prices can double.

And nobody wants to pay AED 150 for a 20-minute ride. So, for daily rides or airport runs, it is suggested to go with RTA taxis. And for a luxury feel? Uber or Careem might suit you better if you don’t mind surge pricing.

Updated · October 2026

Careem Hala is a taxi, not a private car. Hala taxis use the RTA tariff: AED 2.45/km, AED 0.50/min, a starting fare of AED 9 off-peak, AED 10 at night and AED 13 at peak, a AED 13 minimum and a 3-minute free waiting period. During very busy periods a dynamic peak multiplier can apply, and Salik is not included in the app estimate. Careem’s private-car categories are priced differently, so always compare like with like.

How Much Does a Full-Day Taxi Cost in Dubai?

Now that you know a taxi is probably a better option than an Uber, you are probably thinking of searching for “Full day taxi cost Dubai”. No need to worry, this guide has it all covered.

If you are planning to use a taxi for the whole day (like for sightseeing or a business trip), here is what to expect:

Outdated

  • Typical full-day taxi cost in Dubai (8–10 hours): AED 600–800

This usually includes:

  • A fixed daily rate
  • Waiting time
  • Maximum distance limits (often around 250–300 km)

Updated · October 2026

There is no official “full-day taxi” price on the meter. You have three options:

  1. Separate taxi trips: pay each trip on the meter. Four 15 km app trips off-peak cost about AED 183.00 a day.
  2. One taxi waiting for you on the meter: waiting costs AED 30 an hour. For 120 km of driving plus 5 hours of waiting, that is about AED 5 + AED 294 + AED 150 = AED 449.00, plus Salik.
  3. A chauffeur or limousine hire by the hour at a quoted package price. Ask what is included: hours, km, waiting, fuel, Salik and VAT. See chauffeur service in Dubai.

But here is the catch:

Taxi drivers are not flexible with spontaneous stops or long breaks. You will be paying even when you are sipping a latte in a cafe for two hours. So if you want flexibility, watch the battle of Car rental vs taxi Dubai.

Renting a Car vs Taking a Taxi: Which is Better?

3-day taxi vs DriveX rental cost
Three-day cost comparison: Dubai taxis versus a DriveX economy rental.

Here is where things get interesting. You will see the average cost of renting a car in Dubai based on the type of car for a day:

Outdated

  • Economy car: AED 120–150
  • Mid-size: AED 180–250
  • With insurance and fuel: Around AED 200–300 total

Updated · October 2026

  • Economy car at DriveX: AED 99/day at the regular rate, or AED 59/day on the current offer — no deposit.
  • Mid-size and larger cars: prices vary by model and dates — check the live rate on the car rental in Dubai page.
  • Not included in the daily rate: fuel, parking and Salik (see the example below).

Let’s do some math for a 3-day stay in Dubai:

Outdated

  • Taxi cost: AED 400–500/day × 3 = AED 1200–1500
  • Rental car: AED 450–600 total

That is a 50% saving if you rent a car. So, which is better?

In this example, renting at the regular AED 99/day rate costs roughly AED 320–400 less (about 40–50%) than taxis. On the current AED 59/day offer the rental drops to about AED 270–350. The more you drive, the bigger the saving. If you only take one or two short trips a day, taxis are usually cheaper. The break-even point is about four 15 km taxi trips a day. Use the calculator at the top to price your own itinerary.

Pro Tips for Using Taxis in Dubai

Tips for using taxis in Dubai
Practical tips for taxis in Dubai: cheapest booking window, Salik, meter and receipts.

If you have chosen to go with the taxi option, here are tips to act like an expat:

Outdated

  • Download the RTA Smart Taxi app, which offers fast booking + fare estimates.

Updated · October 2026

  • Book through Careem (Hala), Bolt, S’hail, Yango or Zed, the apps the RTA authorises for its taxis. They show an estimate before you confirm.

  • Pay by card, most taxis accept credit/debit/NOL cards.
  • Always ask for a receipt, just in case you forget something.
  • Avoid taxis from tourist hotspots if possible; they are in higher demand and sometimes slower due to traffic.
  • Use Careem or Uber for digital tracking if you are not sure of your route.

New tips · 2026

  • Book between 10 am and 4 pm for the cheapest app starting fare (AED 9), or hail on the street (AED 5).
  • Ask the driver to avoid Salik if the detour is short — each gate adds AED 4.20–6.30.
  • Check the meter is running — if it is not, the ride is free under RTA rules.
  • Lost something? Call Dubai Taxi on 800 88088 or the RTA on 800 9090 with your receipt and trip time.

Conclusion

If you are staying in Dubai for a short time and want comfort, reliability, and zero stress, taxis are an excellent option. The Dubai taxi rates in 2025 2026 are fair, the vehicles are clean and air-conditioned, and you will not need to negotiate or guess prices thanks to RTA’s regulated fares.

But if you are here for more than a couple of days and want to explore at your own pace, especially with family or friends, renting a car is the smarter move, both for flexibility and cost-effectiveness. Get the best deal out of DriveX, where you can choose from a variety of vehicles and flexible pickup dates and times.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dubai taxi cost FAQ
Frequently asked questions about Dubai taxi cost, minimum fare, per-km rate and extras.
Is Uber cheaper than a taxi in Dubai?

Outdated

Not usually. Uber has surge pricing and higher per km charges. Taxis are usually cheaper for normal routes.

Updated · October 2026

Often not for ordinary city trips, but it depends on the live quote. RTA taxis use a published meter tariff (AED 2.45 per km plus the starting fare), while Uber’s car categories show an upfront price that changes with demand. Compare the taxi estimate with the live Uber or Careem quote for your exact route and time.

How much does a taxi ride from Dubai Airport to the Marina cost?

Outdated

Roughly AED 90–100, depending on time of day and traffic.

Updated · October 2026

About AED 112–145 before Salik and waiting. Airport taxis start at AED 20 (AED 25 for a van) and charge AED 2.62 per km, and DXB to Dubai Marina is roughly 35–45 km depending on the terminal and route. See our Dubai airport taxi fare guide for DXB and DWC routes.

Is renting a car in Dubai better than taking taxis?

If you are planning multiple daily trips or exploring beyond the city, yes. It is cheaper and more flexible. As a rule of thumb, once you take about four 15 km taxi trips a day, a rental usually costs less in total. DriveX rentals need no security deposit — see car rental in Dubai without deposit.

How much is a taxi per km in Dubai?

A regular Dubai taxi charges AED 2.45 per km (October 2026), whether you hail it on the street or book it in an app. Airport taxis charge AED 2.62 per km. The starting fare, waiting time, Salik tolls and the Sharjah surcharge are added on top.

What is the minimum taxi fare in Dubai?

AED 12 for a street-hail taxi and AED 13 for an app-booked (e-hail) taxi. The minimum fare is not added to the starting fare — it is the lowest total you can be charged for a trip.

How much is a 1 km taxi ride in Dubai?

A 1 km trip costs the minimum fare: AED 12 by street hail or AED 13 if booked through an app. The meter value (AED 5 + 1 × AED 2.45 = AED 7.45) is below the minimum, so the minimum applies.

How much is a 10 km taxi ride in Dubai?

About AED 29.50 by daytime street hail, AED 33.50 if booked in an app off-peak and AED 37.50 at peak time — before waiting, Salik and other extras.

How much is a 20 km taxi ride in Dubai?

About AED 54.00 by daytime street hail (AED 5 + 20 × AED 2.45), AED 58.00 by app off-peak and AED 62.00 by app at peak time, before waiting and Salik.

How much is a 30 km or 40 km taxi ride in Dubai?

By daytime street hail, 30 km costs about AED 78.50 and 40 km about AED 103.00. Booked in an app off-peak, the same trips cost about AED 82.50 and AED 107.00. Longer trips often cross Salik gates, so add the toll.

Are taxis more expensive at night in Dubai?

Only slightly. The per-km rate stays at AED 2.45, but the street-hail starting fare rises from AED 5 to AED 5.50 between 10 pm and 6 am. App bookings start at AED 10 at night, compared with AED 9 off-peak and AED 13 at peak times.

Is there a Dubai taxi fare calculator?

Yes — the calculator at the top of this page. Choose how you are taking the taxi, type the distance, and add Salik gates, waiting time and an out-of-Dubai trip if they apply. It shows the finished fare, tells you when the minimum fare applies, and compares the cost of your whole stay with a rental car. Under it, a table lists the price of every distance from 1 to 50 km. Booking apps also show an estimate before you confirm.

Is Salik included in the Dubai taxi fare?

No. Salik is added to the meter for each toll gate you pass: AED 4.20 off-peak and AED 6.30 at peak times for taxi passengers (Gulf News, October 2026). App estimates may also exclude Salik, so check the breakdown.

Is the taxi fare charged per person in Dubai?

No. The metered fare is per vehicle, not per passenger. Groups that do not fit in one car need a larger vehicle (for example a van from the airport) or a second taxi.

How much is a taxi from Dubai to Sharjah?

Add AED 20 to the meter for passing through Sharjah. A 15–25 km trip, for example Deira to central Sharjah, works out at roughly AED 61.75–AED 86.25 by daytime street hail, before traffic waiting time.

How much is a taxi from Dubai to Abu Dhabi?

Dubai taxis can take you to other emirates on the meter. At AED 2.45 per km, a 130–145 km trip costs roughly AED 323.50–AED 360.25, plus Salik and Abu Dhabi (DARB) tolls. For a return day trip, renting a car is often cheaper — see driving a Dubai rental car to Abu Dhabi.

Can I pay for a Dubai taxi by card?

Yes. Dubai Taxi lists cash, credit and debit cards (including Apple Pay and Samsung Pay), QR payment and NOL cards. App-booked trips can also be paid through the app wallet.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Dubai per day?

DriveX economy cars cost AED 99 per day at the regular rate, with a current offer of AED 59 per day, and there is no security deposit. Fuel, parking and Salik are extra, and the offer depends on availability and your dates, so confirm it in your quotation. For several trips a day, compare the total with your taxi budget using the calculator on this page.

  • ALI

What’s the taxi fare in Dubai for 20 km if I book through an app at 6 pm on a weekday?

    • Ali

6 pm Monday–Thursday is peak time, so the app starting fare is AED 13. 20 km × AED 2.45 = AED 49, so about AED 62 before waiting. If you cross one Salik gate at peak time, add AED 6.30 for about AED 68.30. Book in an off-peak window (for example 10 am–4 pm) and the starting fare drops to AED 9, so the same trip is about AED 58. You can test your own trip in the calculator at the top of this page.

  • reza

Is there an official RTA taxi fare calculator?

    • Ali

The RTA publishes the fare formula rather than a standalone calculator: starting fare + km + waiting + Salik + Sharjah or Port Rashid fees. The calculator at the top of this page uses that formula with the October 2026 tariff. Booking apps such as Careem, Bolt and S’hail also show an estimate before you confirm.

  • narges

is the per-km rate higher at night?

    • Ali

No. It stays at AED 2.45 per km around the clock. Only the starting fare changes: AED 5.50 instead of AED 5 for a street-hail taxi between 10 pm and 6 am, and AED 10 for app bookings at night.

  • justina

How much is a taxi from Dubai Mall to Atlantis The Palm?

    • Ali

It is roughly 23–25 km depending on the route, so about AED 61–66 by street hail during the day, or AED 69–74 if booked in an app at peak time. Add Salik if your route crosses a gate. Taxis leaving Dubai Mall use the normal city tariff.

  • itan

Why did the meter start at AED 20 when I left Global Village?

    • Ali

During major events, taxis starting from busy event locations such as Global Village, Expo City Dubai and Dubai World Trade Centre can start at up to AED 20. After that, the normal AED 2.45 per km applies. Check the opening meter reading when you get in.

  • shahin delavar

How much is a taxi from Deira to Sharjah?

    • Ali

For a 15–25 km trip to central Sharjah, expect about AED 62–86 by daytime street hail. That includes the AED 20 Sharjah fee. Evening traffic on this route can add waiting time at AED 0.50 per minute, so avoid the busiest hours if you can.

  • mahsa mo

Can I take a Dubai taxi to Abu Dhabi, and what does it cost?

    • Ali

Yes, Dubai taxis can take you to other emirates on the meter. For 130–145 km, budget roughly AED 320–360 one way, plus tolls. For a return day trip a rental is often cheaper. Read our guide on driving a Dubai rental car to Abu Dhabi, and message our team on WhatsApp first if you are thinking about Oman.

  • ema

We are 5 adults. Is the fare per person?

    • Ali

No. The meter charges per vehicle, not per passenger. Five adults usually will not fit in a standard taxi, so ask for a larger vehicle (vans are available at the airport) or take two taxis. For a group staying several days, a 7-seater rental often costs less than two taxis per trip

  • jim

For a 7-day stay, is renting really cheaper than taxis?

    • Ali

If you take about four 15 km trips a day, taxis cost roughly AED 180 per day off-peak, plus airport transfers and Salik. Over a week that is roughly AED 1,500–1,600 (estimate). An economy rental for the same week costs AED 693 at the regular AED 99/day rate (AED 413 on the current AED 59/day offer) plus fuel, parking and Salik, which usually brings the total to roughly AED 900–1,100 (estimate). DriveX does not ask for a deposit. With only one or two short trips a day, taxis are usually cheaper.

  • marziye dolatshahi

I have an Indian driving licence. Can I rent instead of using taxis?

    • Ali

It depends on your licence and visa status. We explain the rules step by step in our Indian driving licence in Dubai guide. Check it before you book, and our team can confirm on WhatsApp.

  • abwl

Is Careem Hala cheaper than a normal taxi?

    • Ali

Hala is an RTA taxi, so it uses the same AED 2.45 per km and the same AED 9 / 10 / 13 starting fares, with an AED 13 minimum and 3 minutes of free waiting. During very busy times a dynamic peak multiplier can apply. Hala Kids, with a child seat, starts at AED 14–18 with an AED 18 minimum. Salik is not included in the app estimate.

  • farsi

Common question: My driver said the meter was broken and asked for AED 50. Is that allowed?

    • Ali

Under RTA rules the journey is free if the meter is not working. Note the taxi number and time, and call the RTA on 800 9090 or Dubai Taxi on 800 88088.

  • hamid

What is the fare from Dubai Marina to DXB at 5 am?

    • Ali

5 am is night time, so an app booking starts at AED 10, or AED 5.50 by street hail. Around 40 km × AED 2.45 = AED 98, so expect about AED 103–108 plus any Salik gates. The airport starting fare only applies to pickups at the airport.

  • sara
