Careem vs Uber in Dubai (2026): Which Is Cheaper?

Checked: 8 November 2026By the DriveX Editorial Team · based on Uber, Careem/Hala and RTA-published information

SHORT ANSWER

Neither Careem nor Uber is always cheaper in Dubai. Careem’s advantage is Hala, a regulated taxi you can book in the app with a published tariff: about AED 34.10 for a modelled 10 km off-peak trip. For private-car rides, enter the same pickup and destination in both apps at the same time and book the lower quote that fits your group and luggage.

🧮 DriveX Taxi Fare Calculator: Careem vs Uber

Step 1: enter the trip to get a Hala Taxi estimate from its published tariff. Step 2: type the prices both apps show you for the same pickup and destination. The calculator ranks them.

Add your Careem and Uber quotes to see which is cheaper for this trip.

How it works: Hala = AED 9/10/13 start + AED 2.51/km (minimum AED 13), excluding waiting time, Salik and airport fares. This tool does not fetch live Careem or Uber prices; it compares the quotes you enter. Tariffs checked 8 November 2026.

The calculator needs JavaScript. Compare the two app quotes manually using the checklist below.

If price is your priority, check Hala in Careem first, then compare it with Uber’s lowest suitable option. If you want a private car, compare equivalent categories in both apps rather than treating a taxi and a premium car as the same product. The rest of this guide shows what to compare and when each app tends to make sense.

Three common journeys to price-check: Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Marina Mall and DXB.

No fixed fare applies to every booking on a Dubai route: the same journey can be quoted differently an hour later. Use these three common trips as a test, entering the exact pickup entrance or terminal in both apps.

Careem in Dubai: One App, Different Ride Options

One app, several products: Hala Taxi and other Careem rides
Careem is one app with different products; Hala is the taxi option inside it.

Careem is not one car category with one fare. Its Dubai rides include Hala Taxi alongside other ride options, which is why one traveller finds Careem much cheaper while another sees little difference from Uber. Hala publishes its tariff: an AED 9 off-peak, AED 10 night or AED 13 peak starting fare plus AED 2.51/km, with an AED 13 minimum, according to Hala’s fare page. Those rules should not be copied across to other Careem categories.

When you compare Hala with an Uber private car, you are comparing different products. That is fine if you only need to get from A to B, but it does not tell you which app has the cheaper equivalent private-car service. For a closer comparison, check passenger capacity, luggage, vehicle category, pickup time, fare conditions and waiting or cancellation charges. Category names change, so use the options shown for your actual location.

Is Careem owned by Uber?

Yes, the ride-hailing side is. Uber announced the close of its US$3.1 billion acquisition of Careem on 3 January 2020, and said the two would keep their own regional services and brands (Uber newsroom). In 2023 e& invested US$400 million to become majority shareholder of the separate Careem Super App, and e&’s announcement confirmed that Uber kept 100% of the Careem ride-hailing business.

For passengers, the point is simple: Careem and Uber remain separate apps. Shared ownership does not mean identical quotes, shared promotions or one booking system, so a lower price in one app is still worth checking against the other.

Uber in Dubai: Compare the Category, Not an Old Tariff

Uber operates in Dubai with app booking and prices shown before you request a ride. The options depend on your location and availability, so choose by the category description, capacity and quote, not by what a similar name includes in another country.

Uber also offers services Careem does not, and the reverse is true. For example, since December 2025 the RTA has piloted WeRide robotaxis bookable through the Uber app in Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah, as The National reported. Availability can change, so check the app for the current options.

Why a universal per-km fare is misleading

A single kilometre rate does not describe what you pay. For private-car quotes, the total can reflect:

  • Starting or base fare for the selected category;
  • distance, using that city and category, not a rate from elsewhere;
  • time, which grows with congestion and waiting;
  • a minimum fare, which matters on short trips;
  • demand adjustments, which move separately in each app;
  • Salik and other fees, which may be included or added;
  • promotions, which change what you actually pay.

A low starting fare does not guarantee the lowest final price. For a meter-based benchmark on any distance, see our guide to metered taxi fares.

Is Careem Cheaper Than Uber in Dubai?

When Careem or Uber is the cheaper ride in Dubai
Either app can win: the category, demand and promotions decide each booking.

Careem can be cheaper, especially when Hala or an eligible promotion gives you the lower total. Its non-taxi rides are not guaranteed to undercut comparable Uber categories. Uber can win a particular booking when its displayed price is lower for a service that meets the same needs.

When Careem may be better value

  • Hala is available and suits your trip;
  • an eligible promotion reduces the payable fare;
  • its suitable category shows the lower quote;
  • a closer driver makes it more practical.

When Uber may be better value

  • an equivalent category shows a lower price;
  • your account has an eligible offer;
  • its vehicle better fits your passengers or luggage;
  • its pickup time is more convenient.

Compare like for like

Like-for-like comparison of Careem and Uber ride categories
Compare a taxi with a taxi and a private car with a private car.

Comparing Careem’s cheapest taxi option with a premium Uber car will not tell you whether Careem’s equivalent premium service is cheaper. Pick one of two questions:

  • Budget comparison: the lowest-priced option in either app that safely fits your group and luggage.
  • Equivalent-service comparison: similar vehicle categories, capacities and booking conditions.

Both are useful; just be clear which one you are answering. If you also want a street-taxi benchmark, see taxi vs Careem and taxi vs Uber in Dubai.

Surge Pricing: Why the Cheaper App Can Change

Why surge pricing changes which ride app is cheaper
Demand moves separately in each app, so yesterday’s winner can lose today.

Busy periods, major events and concentrated pickup demand change quotes, and each app has its own drivers and demand, so prices do not rise and fall together.

Careem and Hala peak pricing

Hala publishes two mechanisms: a scheduled AED 13 peak starting fare and a dynamic peak multiplier capped at 1.3×, shown in the app before you confirm. Do not assume those Hala rules apply to every other Careem category, and do not treat special-event tariffs as the normal year-round price.

Uber surge pricing

According to Uber’s surge pricing page, prices rise:

“when demand for rides exceeds the number of available drivers”

The relevant figure is the price displayed for your journey now. There is no basis for assuming Uber is always dearer at busy times, or that Careem is unaffected by the same demand.

How to compare during a busy period

  1. Enter the same pickup and destination in both apps.
  2. Select comparable categories.
  3. Check the price and estimated pickup time.
  4. Read any peak or extra-charge notices.
  5. Book one ride only; cancelling a second booking can wipe out the saving.

If you can wait, checking again later may help, but a lower price later is not guaranteed.

Careem vs Uber at Dubai Airport

At DXB the best booking is the one that fits your terminal, passengers, luggage and pickup point. Do not compare an airport-origin ride with a city ride of the same distance; airport fees and service conditions can differ. Before requesting either app:

  • select the correct terminal and exact destination;
  • check which categories are available for airport pickup;
  • read the meeting-point instructions for that booking;
  • confirm passenger and luggage capacity;
  • review waiting and cancellation conditions.

Do not assume every Careem category, Hala included, is available at every pickup point. There is no permanent airport winner: compare both quotes when you are ready to leave. For a family with several suitcases, vehicle size can matter more than a small price gap. If you pre-book, read that booking’s own terms, since scheduled rides can have different pricing and cancellation rules.

Features depend on app version, location, account and category. For tourists, Hala’s FAQ says an international number works if it can receive the verification SMS. Choose your payment method before confirming, check that cash is accepted for that booking if you plan to use it, and do not pay cash again for a fare already charged in the app. Tipping is optional.

Is Careem safer than Uber?

There is not enough evidence to rank either app as categorically safer. Whichever you use, match the plate and vehicle to the booking, confirm the driver, wear your seat belt, share your trip where available, keep payment within the app or agreed method, and report concerns in the app.

One Day of App Rides vs One Day of Car Rental

Add every ride of the day before comparing it with an itemised rental quote.

For one outing, an app ride saves you driving and parking. For several stops across Dubai, compare the whole day with an itemised rental quote.

Add up the whole day

Add every separate ride, including the returnStart with the rental quotation
Include tolls and extras shown in each quoteAdd fuel, parking and Salik
Allow for different prices at different timesCheck mileage allowance and excess-mileage rate

Illustrative arithmetic, not observed fares: four rides quoted at AED 35, AED 50, AED 45 and AED 60 add up to AED 190, before anything those quotes exclude. A rental is cheaper only if its comparable all-in cost is lower.

If you want to avoid a deposit hold, ask for the separate charge too: on eligible DriveX cars it is an AED 80 or AED 140 no-deposit car rental charge, and the quote should state its charging period and refund terms. Browse our economy car rental options for your dates.

Final Verdict: Uber or Careem in Dubai?

Our recommendation by situation

SituationRecommendation

An equivalent private carCompare similar categories in both apps
A busy periodRecheck both quotes; ignore yesterday’s price
You have a promotionCompare the amount you will actually pay

Our verdict: keep both apps if price matters. Careem’s Hala option makes it the natural first check for a budget ride, while either app can win when you compare equivalent private cars. No evidence supports calling one app the cheapest for every Dubai journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Careem cheaper than Uber in Dubai?

Sometimes. Careem’s Hala taxi option, a lower quote for a comparable car or an eligible promotion can make it cheaper. For private-car categories neither app wins every time, so compare both quotes for the same trip at the same moment.

Which is cheaper: Careem or Uber?

Neither is cheaper for every trip. The result depends on the category, pickup point, time, demand and promotions on your account. A comparison from one city or one day should not be applied automatically to the next booking.

Why is Careem sometimes much cheaper than Uber?

You may be comparing Hala, a regulated taxi with a published tariff, with an Uber private-car category. Promotions, availability and demand can widen the gap too. Check that both quotes are for a similar service first.

Does Uber own Careem?

Uber completed its US$3.1 billion acquisition of Careem in January 2020. When e& took a majority stake in the Careem Super App in 2023, Uber kept 100% of the Careem ride-hailing business. The two apps still run as separate brands with separate prices.

What is the Careem vs Uber price per kilometre?

There is no single per-kilometre figure covering every category in both apps. Hala publishes AED 2.51/km plus an AED 9 to 13 starting fare; private-car quotes also reflect time, demand and fees. Compare the total quote, not a rate.

Is Uber or Careem better at Dubai Airport?

Neither is automatically better. Choose by the categories available at your terminal, the complete quotation, luggage space and the designated pickup point. The official taxi rank is a third option worth checking when the queue is short.

Can the fare change after booking?

It can, under each service’s conditions, for example if you change the destination, add a stop, keep the driver waiting or pass Salik gates. Check whether the app shows an estimate or an upfront price and read its fare notes.

Should I install both Careem and Uber for Dubai?

If price matters, yes. Set up both accounts and payment methods before you need a ride, then compare suitable categories. Book one ride only, because cancelling a second booking can cost more than the saving.

Questions Visitors Ask Us

Two questions we hear often, answered by the DriveX team. Have your own? Ask it in the comments below.

VISITOR QUESTION

“Careem showed AED 38 and Uber AED 52 for the same trip. Is Careem just cheaper?”

DriveX Team

Check the categories first. If the AED 38 was Hala and the AED 52 a private car, you compared a taxi with a car service. Put both quotes into the calculator above, then compare a similar Careem car category with the Uber one before deciding which app is cheaper for you.

VISITOR QUESTION

“Should I book both and cancel the dearer one?”

DriveX Team

No. Both apps can charge for cancellations once a driver is on the way; Hala, for example, lists an AED 13 cancellation fee after a driver is assigned. Compare the quotes on screen and request one ride.
