Fares checked: 7 November 2026By the DriveX Editorial Team · based on Dubai Taxi Company, Hala and Dubai Airports published tariffs
SHORT ANSWER
A street-hailed Dubai taxi is usually cheaper than Hala, the taxi service inside Careem, for the same ordinary city journey before promotions. On a modelled 10 km daytime trip that is about AED 29.50 against AED 34.10 off-peak, before waiting time, Salik and other adjustments. Careem also sells other ride categories with their own live prices, so there is no single “Careem fare”.
🧮 Taxi vs Careem Fare Calculator
Enter your trip and compare a street-hailed taxi with Hala (the taxi option in Careem) using the published tariffs in this guide.
STREET-HAILED TAXI
AED 29.50
per trip
HALA VIA CAREEM
AED 29.50
per trip
Street taxi is cheaper by AED 4.60 per trip. Hala adds booking convenience and tracking.
Planning estimate only. Excludes Salik, airport-origin fares, promotions and special-event tariffs. Other Careem categories (not Hala) price differently: check the live quote in the app. Tariffs checked 7 November 2026.
The calculator needs JavaScript. Use the 10 km table below instead.
10 km planning estimate (distance-based, checked on 7 November 2026)
| Booking scenario | Street-hailed taxi | Hala Taxi via Careem | Other Careem categories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daytime, off-peak | AED 29.50 | AED 34.10 | Check the live app quotation |
| Night, outside peak periods | AED 30.00 | AED 35.10 | Check the live app quotation |
| Scheduled daytime peak | AED 29.50* | AED 38.10 before any dynamic multiplier | Check the live app quotation |
Modelled estimates, not receipts or live fares. They exclude waiting charges, Salik, airport pickup charges, promotions and special-event tariffs. *The street-taxi peak example assumes an ordinary daytime pickup.
Choose a street taxi when one is nearby and price is your priority. Choose Hala when arranging the pickup and tracking the driver in an app is worth the extra cost. For any other Careem category, compare the live quotation before you confirm. The rest of this guide shows how the figures are built, why the per-km rate differs between pages, how peak pricing works and when a rental car beats both.

Taxi vs Careem Dubai: The 10 km Comparison Explained

The table at the top uses one assumed distance in every column, so you compare pricing rules rather than different routes or advertised “from” prices. A street taxi has no scheduled peak starting fare, which is why its peak row matches the daytime row, while Hala’s starting fare rises from AED 9 off-peak to AED 13 at peak.
What the numbers leave out: waiting or time charges, Salik, airport-origin charges, promotions, a longer route or an added stop, and special-event tariffs. Use them to compare options, not as a quote.
How the Estimates Are Calculated

- Street taxi: AED 5 starting fare (6 am to 10 pm) or AED 5.50 (10 pm to 6 am), plus 10 × AED 2.45. That gives AED 29.50 by day and AED 30.00 at night, using Dubai Taxi Company’s published tariff.
- Hala Taxi: AED 9 off-peak, AED 10 at night or AED 13 at peak, plus 10 × AED 2.51. That gives AED 34.10, AED 35.10 and AED 38.10, using Hala’s fare page.
The higher Hala start is an app-booking element. When the current structure was introduced, Gulf News reported booking fees of AED 4 off-peak rising to AED 7.50 at peak, on top of the AED 5 or AED 5.50 base fare. You are paying for the booking convenience, not for a different class of vehicle.
Why Do the Per-km Rates Differ?

Dubai Taxi Company’s page lists AED 2.45/km for street and app bookings, while Hala’s fare page lists AED 2.51/km. One older Hala page we opened still shows AED 2.45. Taxi distance rates in Dubai follow local fuel prices, as Gulf Business reported when the RTA changed them, so pages updated on different dates can disagree.
This guide uses each service’s own published rate rather than assuming both are synchronised. If AED 2.45/km applies to your Hala trip, its three 10 km estimates fall by AED 0.60 to AED 33.50, AED 34.50 and AED 37.50. Always check the app estimate and applicable tariff before you travel.
Careem vs RTA Taxi: What Are You Actually Booking?
“Careem vs RTA taxi” is not always a comparison between two separate vehicle services. Dubai’s regulated taxis can be hailed on the street or booked through an app, Hala brings taxi booking into Careem, and other Careem categories have their own pricing.
Three ways to book a ride
| Option | What you are booking | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Street-hailed taxi | A regulated taxi from a permitted roadside spot or taxi rank | Meter tariff, queue and availability |
| Hala Taxi via Careem | A taxi requested through the Careem app | Starting fare, estimate, pickup time and peak notices |
| Other Careem categories | The ride category offered for your journey | Live price, vehicle, capacity and booking terms |
The useful question is therefore: “Is this Careem option better value than an available street taxi?”
What About Careem Go and Comfort?
Guides often mention names such as Go or Comfort. Category names and availability can change, so do not assume either is a permanent Dubai product with a fixed tariff. Enter your real pickup and destination, open each category’s details and compare the quoted fare, passenger and luggage capacity, pickup time and cancellation terms. For the taxi option inside the app, see our Hala taxi guide.
Is Careem Cheaper Than a Taxi in Dubai?

Not automatically. Without a promotion, the published starting fares generally favour a street-hailed taxi over Hala for an equivalent ordinary journey. In the daytime example Hala costs AED 4.60 more (AED 34.10 against AED 29.50) before waiting, tolls or promotions.
Choose a street taxi when
- a taxi is already available at your hotel or a nearby rank;
- you want a straightforward city journey;
- keeping the fare low matters more than arranging a pickup;
- you would rather not depend on an account or mobile data.
Choose Hala when
- finding a passing taxi would be difficult;
- you want a pickup at a specific permitted location;
- driver details and trip tracking are useful;
- you prefer bookings and trip records in one app;
- an eligible promotion makes the final price competitive.
For very short journeys, minimum fares matter. Dubai Taxi Company lists AED 12 for a street-hail minimum and AED 13 for an e-hail minimum, and Hala lists AED 13 for Hala Taxi, Max and EV. A minimum fare is the lowest payable trip amount, not an extra added on top of the starting fare.
Careem Dubai Fare per km: Why One Number Is Not Enough
No single Careem Dubai fare per km covers every category. Hala publishes a taxi tariff; for any other category the live quotation and its fare details are the right comparison. Even with a published rate, your total can include:
- Starting fare: AED 5 or 5.50 for a street hail, AED 9, 10 or 13 for a Hala booking.
- Distance: AED 2.45/km or AED 2.51/km, depending on the page and date.
- Time or waiting: both services list AED 0.50 per minute; Hala adds a 3-minute grace period after the driver arrives.
- Salik: Hala says tolls are not included in the estimate you see before booking, so they are added separately.
- Sharjah: Dubai Taxi Company lists an extra AED 20 when a trip passes through Sharjah.
- Peak and event adjustments: see the next section.
- Route changes: a different route, destination or added stop changes the original estimate.
For another distance, use the fare calculator in our Dubai taxi fare calculator guide. Any result is a planning estimate, not a substitute for the meter or the Careem quotation.
Surge Pricing: Scheduled Peak Fares vs Dynamic Peak Pricing

Two separate mechanisms can raise a Hala fare, and mixing them up leads to double counting.
1. Scheduled starting fares
The starting amount changes by time band and day. This is Dubai Taxi Company’s app-booking timetable, and Hala lists the same three starting amounts (AED 9, 10 and 13):
App-booking starting amount (AED), by time band
| Time band | Mon–Thu | Friday | Sat–Sun |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 am – 6 am | 10 | 10 | 10 |
| 6 am – 8 am | 9 | 9 | 9 |
| 8 am – 10 am | 13 | 13 | 9 |
| 10 am – 4 pm | 9 | 9 | 9 |
| 4 pm – 8 pm | 13 | 13 | 13 |
| 8 pm – 10 pm | 9 | 13 | 13 |
| 10 pm – 12 am | 10 | 13 | 13 |
A AED 13 start is not proof that a surge multiplier is active; it can simply be the scheduled amount for that band. Note the weekday morning peak, the longer Friday evening peak and the lack of a weekend morning peak, and confirm the current timetable before you rely on it.
2. Dynamic peak pricing
Hala’s dynamic peak policy describes demand-based adjustments with a published maximum of 1.3×. It names possible windows of 8–10 am and 3–8 pm, which are not identical to the scheduled starting-fare bands, and says there are no fixed locations: special events, exhibitions and bad weather can also trigger it.
According to Hala’s dynamic peak fare page:
“…capped at a maximum peak of 1.3 x”
When the factor applies, the app shows a notice before you confirm and includes it in the estimate. Do not multiply the displayed estimate again. The 1.3× policy is also not a cap on other Careem categories.
Special events can have different rules
The general cap is not universal. For New Year 2026, Hala’s event guidance described a AED 20 starting fare, AED 40 where peak pricing applied, and dynamic fares of up to 2× between 6 pm and 6 am in selected locations. That does not apply to an ordinary trip, but on major event nights you should read the specific notice and the live booking screen.
How to avoid an unnecessary peak premium
- Compare the app estimate with an available taxi rank before you confirm.
- Check whether a peak notice is displayed.
- Make sure your pickup pin is at a permitted location.
- If your plans are flexible, check again after the busy period.
- Review cancellation terms first; Hala lists a AED 13 cancellation fee once a driver is assigned.
Dubai Airport: Taxi Rank or Careem?
Airport-origin journeys need their own comparison. Do not use the ordinary AED 5 city starting fare for a trip that begins at DXB.
Airport taxi tariff and a modelled 20 km journey
| Component | Published figure | Modelled 20 km total |
|---|---|---|
| Normal airport taxi start | AED 20 (Dubai Taxi Company) | AED 72.40 |
| Airport van start | AED 25 (Dubai Taxi Company) | AED 77.40 |
| Distance rate | AED 2.62/km | 20 × 2.62 = AED 52.40 |
| Waiting charge | AED 0.50/minute | Not included |
The official sources do not fully agree: Dubai Airports states an AED 25 starting fare, while Dubai Taxi Company’s airport page lists AED 20 for a normal taxi. With AED 25, the same modelled 20 km trip is AED 77.40. These are distance-based examples before waiting, tolls and adjustments, not fixed transfer prices to any hotel.
For Careem from the airport: select the correct airport and terminal, check which categories are available, read the displayed fare and extra-charge notes, follow the designated pickup point and confirm the vehicle suits your luggage and group. Do not assume Hala or every other category can collect from every terminal pickup zone. A ride to the airport from a hotel is also priced differently from a ride starting at the airport.
Airport verdict: the official taxi rank is a straightforward choice when the queue is manageable. Compare Careem when its vehicle, pickup arrangement or live price suits your trip better.
Payments, Receipts and Tips
Dubai Taxi Company lists cash, credit and debit cards (including Apple Pay and Samsung Pay) and NOL for its taxi service. For a Careem booking, check the methods shown for your account and the selected ride before you confirm; do not assume every method works with every product.
- Receipts: ask for the taxi receipt, or review the trip record and fare breakdown in the app.
- Charged in the app: if the ride is set to charge your card, check the payment status before you also pay cash.
- First Hala ride: Hala’s FAQ mentions a pre-authorisation charge when you book it. Compare any unfamiliar amount with the completed trip record before assuming you were charged twice.
- Tourists: the same FAQ says an international number works if it can receive the verification SMS; you also need mobile data.
- Tips: optional for both options, and not included in this article’s estimates.
One Day of Taxis vs One Day of Car Rental

For one or two journeys a taxi is often simpler than collecting a rental car and finding parking. For a day with several stops, compare the complete daily totals.
Four separate 10 km daytime, off-peak journeys (no waiting or tolls)
| Option | Modelled daily cost |
|---|---|
| Four street-taxi journeys | AED 118.00 |
| Four Hala journeys at the published AED 2.51/km | AED 136.40 |
| One day of car rental | Your quoted rental price plus fuel, parking, Salik and any fees |
The taxi totals are illustrations, not a prediction of your itinerary. For a fair rental comparison, list the rental charge for your dates, taxes and fees, insurance options, fuel, parking and Salik, delivery or collection charges, and mileage limits with excess-mileage rates.
If you want to avoid a deposit hold, ask for the separate charge as well. On eligible DriveX cars that is an AED 80 or AED 140 no-deposit car rental charge, and the quote should state its charging period and refund terms. Browse our economy car rental options and compare vehicles for your dates.
Rental verdict: a car can suit several stops, luggage or a flexible itinerary, but savings are not guaranteed. Check the total quotation and that you are eligible to rent and drive.

Final Verdict: When Each Option Wins
Pick by situation
| Your situation | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A taxi is nearby and price is the priority | Street-hailed taxi | Lower published starting fare |
| You need an arranged pickup | Hala through Careem | Booking convenience and tracking |
| You want a particular vehicle category | Other Careem options | Compare the vehicle details and the live price |
| You have just arrived at DXB | Official taxi rank or a live Careem comparison | Queue, luggage and pickup point matter |
| A major event or busy period | Check both live options | Special tariffs and access limits may apply |
| Several stops across the day | An itemised rental quote | Total itinerary cost matters more than one fare |
Bottom line: take a street taxi for straightforward value when one is readily available. Choose Hala when arranging the pickup is worth the extra cost. Choose another Careem category only after checking what the added price actually buys.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Careem cheaper than a taxi in Dubai?
Not usually when you compare an ordinary street-hailed taxi with Hala before promotions. Street taxis have the lower published starting fare. Other Careem categories need a live quotation, so there is no universal price ranking.
Is Hala the same as Careem?
No. Hala is a taxi-booking service you can use inside the Careem app. Careem also offers other ride categories, which can differ in vehicle, price and booking conditions, so choosing Hala is not the same as choosing every Careem option.
How much is a 10 km taxi ride compared with Hala?
Our modelled daytime estimate is AED 29.50 for a street taxi and AED 34.10 for off-peak Hala, using each service’s published rate. Both exclude waiting time, Salik tolls and other adjustments, so treat them as planning figures, not receipts.
What is the Careem Dubai fare per km?
There is no single rate for every Careem category. Hala’s fare page lists AED 2.51/km, while Dubai Taxi Company’s taxi page lists AED 2.45/km. Check the live estimate in the app for the exact ride you select.
Does Hala have surge pricing?
Yes. Hala publishes a dynamic peak policy with a multiplier capped at 1.3× in specified windows. It is separate from the scheduled peak starting fare, and the app shows a notice before you confirm when the peak factor applies.
Is Careem cheaper than an airport taxi?
There is no guaranteed winner. Compare the live Careem quotation with the airport taxi tariff for your destination, luggage and terminal, and include waiting, tolls and pickup convenience in both totals.
Can tourists use Careem in Dubai?
Yes. Hala’s FAQ says you can sign up with an international number as long as it can receive the verification SMS. You also need mobile data to book and manage the ride, and a first Hala ride may show a pre-authorisation charge.
Is a rental car cheaper than taking taxis all day?
It depends on your itinerary. Add up every journey you expect to make, then compare the total with an itemised rental quotation including fuel, parking, Salik and fees. A rental can suit a multi-stop day, but savings are not guaranteed.
Questions Visitors Ask Us
Two questions we hear often, answered by the DriveX team. Have your own? Ask it in the comments below.
VISITOR QUESTION
“We land at DXB around 6 pm with two suitcases. Taxi rank or Careem?”
DriveX Team
If the rank queue looks manageable, the taxi is the simple choice. Around 6 pm you are inside Hala’s scheduled peak band (4–8 pm) and its possible dynamic window (3–8 pm), so open the app, read the estimate and any peak notice, and compare it with the airport tariff for your destination. Check that the category fits two suitcases.
VISITOR QUESTION
“We will make four or five trips a day for three days. Is a rental car cheaper than taxis?”
DriveX Team
Add up the trips first: four 10 km daytime taxi journeys model at about AED 118 a day before waiting and Salik. Then ask for an itemised economy-car quotation covering fuel, parking, Salik, mileage, insurance and any no-deposit charge. Whichever total is lower for your real route is the better choice, and it is not always the rental.
